Justin Selander said he hadn’t played for years, but when he heard there was a memorial game for Black Oaks teammate Matt Sokol he suited up. A full-time soccer coach with Santa Rosa United, Selander said he first met Sokol in the late ’90s when SRJC coach Butcher and later Dwayne Shaffer used to host 6-aside during the summer. It was there he met several of the Black Oaks and eventually went on to play several years for the Oaks with Sokol.
You could tell Selander really wanted to score one. Under the sustained onslaught you really had to give credit to the NorCal goalie for working overtime. Several people scored with the final tally 7-2. It appeared that it might not be the day for Selander, who had at least a dozen good looks at goal. But deep into the second half all his hard work paid off. Tune in until the end for a classic Black Oaks celebration which helped cap a memorable game in honor of Matt Sokol.
That. Was. Awesome.
